The Internet is abuzz with rumors about what Apple has in store for the end of this year. Talk about the iPhone 5 has been around since the release of iPhone 4 in April; recent rumors have swelled over a new version of the iPad; and even the iPod Touch is getting some attention, with whispers of a very exciting new feature.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, iPhone 5 will be lighter and thinner than its predecessor, as well as feature an 8 megapixel camera (up from five). In addition, the report also indicates that there will be another new iPhone introduced next year, this one with featuring “new ways of charging the phone,” which likely alludes to inductive charging (i.e., a wireless charging pad). The article also mentioned Apple working on a less expensive version of the phone, with an edge-to-edge screen. This model is likely to be the ‘4S’ of the series, placing components for the new, sleeker model in the older shells.
Phew…is that enough iPhone variations to get you through the next year?
Let’s move on to the iPad: there’s only one new version to talk about. You’ve barely gotten fingerprint smudges on your iPad2 and it’s already likely there’s a new one coming out in a couple months. This version won’t so much be the iPad3, but more of a complimentary piece to the iPad2, something like the “Pro” of the MacBook series. Reports are calling the new version the “iPad HD” and have it donning a 9.7-inch, double resolution (2048 x 1536) screen. This version would be aimed at professionals in video and photography, and will be complimented by iPad adaptations of Final Cut and Aperture applications.
September is the usual release date for the new incarnation of the iPod Touch, so what do we have to look forward to with this year’s model? Well, the iPod Touch has often been touted as an iPhone without a phone, but now it’s about to get a whole lot closer. Currently iPods can only connect to the Internet via wi-fi hotspots. Sources across the Internet are saying that the fifth generation iPod Touch will feature 3G data connectivity. Now, this connectivity will be for data-only traffic – the iPhone’s got to have something the iPod doesn’t, right? However, iPod users already have use of the FaceTime and Skype VoIP apps, so the line between the two devices is really being blurred here.
What new Apple products are you looking forward to? Are you still exploring your iPad2? Or maybe you’re upset at the news that your new iPhone 4 is already being one-upped?
