Sixteen months and 25 million units sold, and iPad users are still using the same old Facebook app from the iPhone? That doesn’t seem right. With iPad’s screen well over double the size of the iPhone’s, running the phone-tailored app seems such a waste of screen space and other tablet capabilities.
Then the HP TouchPad comes around touts the first ever Facebook tablet app right off the bat. So where’s the love for Apple users?
Not too far, according to Techcrunch.
The tech review site was able to fidget with the code in the most recent update of the iPhone app, and unlocked a tablet-optimized version. The app uses a left-hand side navigation bar, so that you have access to messaging and other tools while checking your news feed (as opposed to clicking back to the main menu screen). Updating your status or uploading a photo or video will trigger a new window that will pop-up above the main screen. The app even integrates the new chat system Facebook introduced earlier this month.
Of course, getting the app at this point takes a bit more tech know-how than most of us have, and it would certainly cost you the warranty on your iPad. So the rest of us will just have to wait.
It’s possible that Facebook knew all too well that someone in the blogosphere would crack into the recent update and find the new app. Maybe we can consider this leak a sort of “soft announcement.” Which hopefully means the official announcement (from Facebook or Apple) shouldn’t be far off.
Keep checking back and we’ll give you the details as soon as they come in!
